The Monsoon Bulletin
Bhubaneswar is hot, humid, and gets a monsoon that will not let you forget it. Nine out of ten plants brought home here die from too much water and not enough drainage, not from neglect. This is the whole of what we tell everyone.
Before you rely on the light figures above: they are a nursery's rule of thumb, not a measurement. Two balconies in the same building can differ by two hours. Treat the list as a shortlist, then ask us about your actual spot.
By season
Rain arrives harder than the pot can drain, and root rot takes days. Raise pots off the floor and never let a saucer hold water.
Dry air and bright sun dry potted soil by morning. Water early, water deep, and put a finger in the top two inches first.
Scorch on west-facing leaves and stalled new growth. Take tender foliage out of the hard afternoon sun, and do not repot in peak heat.
By what goes wrong
Long thin stems, wide gaps between leaves, pale colour. It is the plant stretching for light it cannot reach.
Neither will succulents. At three hours or less, the line on this page is six plants long, and that is the honest number.
We will talk you out of buying them. A raised ledge in full sun with zero rain contact is the only version that works here.
Why a nursery, not a shop
Seed or cutting, in our own medium. Far too small to survive the trip home, and never offered at this stage.
Roots, then first true leaves. Alive now, but with no reserves behind it. Still not for sale.
Days outdoors in full sun and rain. The stage most nurseries skip, and the reason their plants die on your balcony.
Only now does it go on the line. If it is here, it has already survived a monsoon and a summer on our end of it.
